Reorienting Renovating

Series Summary:

Is Christianity first a spiritual search? Getting a little religion? Or even committing to change?

As we start a new series "Reorienting/Renovating", we'll look at the story of Nicodemus in John 3. When he comes into contact with Jesus, he is completely disoriented about what spirituality really is.

We all have longings, desires and dreams. But have you ever asked what is underneath those things?

Pastor John opens up John 4, the story of the Samaritan woman at the well, to explore our spiritual thirst.

We all agree there is real and terrible evil out there. Yet there is so little moral consensus on what that evil is. There are so many cries for justice, yet no one can seem to agree on what it looks like and who needs it. We look at politics, and agree it is poisoned, but can't find common ground on who poisoned it.

As we look out into the world, we see good guys and bad guys. And maybe that's part of the problem.

As we continue our series REORIENTING/RENOVATING, we'll explore a story that Jesus tells meant to disorient us on our view of the good guys/bad guys.

God is disorienting you, He is disorienting you to reorient you into His Plan, Purpose and Will concerning your life. Embrace God’s Plan to reorient your life.

Most of us think greed is a bad thing. Yet, most of us wouldn't say we ourselves were greedy. Jesus tells us to be hyper-vigilant against greed. So is it that we are doing a good job of not being greedy, or that we just don't know what to look for?

Pastor John opens up Luke 12 to explore greed, anxiety and shadows.

Who are you? That's not a simple question to answer. But most of us answer that question under the premise of an achieved identity. That is, things we do. Titles we have earned. The way we try to control people's perceptions. But Christianity offers something fundamentally different to people: an identity that is not achieved, but received.

Everyone of us is walking through something. A trial, difficulty, or challenge. Why would a good and just God allow us to suffer?

Suffering...why? Is it karma, survival of the fittest? Should we just toughen up? Or figure out how to escape?

In today's message, Pastor John opens up John 9 where Jesus disorients how we think about suffering.

In an age of "follow your heart", we forget to ask, "what forms my heart”?

Today we'll open Mark 4 and explore Jesus' parable of the sower to help us better understand heart formation. You'll hear about the musical "The Greatest Showman", a heart-aware atheist, and some choking hazards.

Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey on Palm Sunday. Jesus' choice to ride on a donkey conveyed a message of humility and peace. We can learn from His example and consider what we are communicating to the world today. what are we communicating in our world today?
