Don't Look at Your Faith

by Pastor John

Mark 9:14-29

How's your faith?

I don't like that question. I always have to answer with a mixed response.

"It's up and down depending on how I'm feeling and how well I'm doing in following Jesus. My faith is 'eehh'."

The problem is that we're looking at our faith, rather than looking at Jesus. Faith is definitely something. It is not nothing. But it isn't really effective when we are constantly aware of it as a "thing", measuring it and analyzing it's size.

What is far more powerful is to start with "How is Jesus?"

Ah, there is more hope there.

For you see, Jesus is ruling and reigning right now. He has paid for all my sins and was punished in my place. But He didn't stay in the grave. He rose from the dead and defeated death. He is the fulfillment of all the promises of God. He isn't scared by the brokenness of this world, but has committed to renew every inch of the creation. He is powerful enough to change sinners hearts and to grow His church even when the culture is caving in around it. Jesus uses dark situations for good. And He rules and reigns right now on behalf of His people. One day He will return to crush His enemies and make His rule visible. And at that time every knee will bow and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

So don't start with "how's my faith?".

You'll always end up discouraged.

Start with "how is Jesus?", and then point your faith towards Him. And even then, if your faith is shaky, it won't stop Jesus. And when you realize that, your faith actually becomes strong, because it is totally unaware of itself, and fully aware and trusting in Jesus.
