His Words

Mark 1:21-28

by Tony P.

Mark's Gospel has always been a fun, quick read for me.  Like an action comic, or graphic novel (though not anything like The Walking Dead!), it is fast paced with vivid imagery.  You'll notice the word "and" at the beginning of most of the verses in this book.  Thus the pacing and quickness of the story; the book is just hard to put down once you get started!

And Jesus is set forth immediately as the one and only Superhero, whose superpower is not some great physical strength or speed, but his superpower is his Words.  His WORDS.  We’ve already seen, from Pastor’s first sermon, the compelling nature of Jesus’ calls to the first disciples.  He says, “Follow me,” and they follow Jesus, dropping their very livelihoods for God only knows what, but they follow.  And so do we, in radical obedience to a call to God only knows, but the power of His words are compelling, as they are assuring--as if to say “you can’t go wrong following Me.”

And the very next episode finds Jesus teaching in such a compelling way as to astonish his hearers...not the least of which was an “unclean spirit” possessed man, who seems to cry out in protest at this new presence of Jesus.  Jesus, as if to say, “I ain’t got time for this,” commands the unclean spirit, “Be silent, and come out of him!”  Taking a parting shot on the hapless man, making him convulse and yell, the demon comes out.  The demon, however, does not take a parting at Jesus!  The demon obeys Jesus!

And so it is with the Words of Jesus.  He speaks, He commands, and obedience follows.  The disciples follow his command.  Demons follow his command.  Healing comes at Jesus’ command.  Even belief comes at Jesus’ command.  And the result?  Jesus’ fame spreads everywhere.

And how about you?  Do you see it?  Obedience to the call and command of Jesus, His Words, results in his fame spreading everywhere.  How can we promote King Jesus’ fame in Hallandale and Hollywood?  Obey him.  Jesus said, ““If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”  King Jesus’ fame spreads everywhere as our lives respond to His Words, demonstrating our love to Him, to each other, and to our community.  His Kingship is seen to be compelling, compassionate, and kind.

Prayer:  King Jesus, may my obedience to your compelling Word be my delight, as a testament of my love for you.  May your fame spread everywhere as a result!  In your powerful and grace-laden name, Jesus, Amen.
